By now, most Floridians know that Florida’s HB 1365 has gone into effect. This bill bars the homeless from camping on city streets. As such, some of Florida’s cities have looked at alternate housing solutions. One Florida city, West Palm Beach, is considering buying a La Quinta Inn and converting it to housing for the homeless. However, some residents who live in the area are unhappy.
What Is Happening?: In September of 2024, Palm Beach County Commissioners voted unanimously to allow county staff to negotiate to purchase the LaQuinta Inn at 5981 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach for $16.7 million.
At the time Palm Beach County mayor Maria Sachs said:
“We’re doing everything we can to make sure every homeless person has a roof over their head.”
And Commissioner Maria Marino has said:
“There is nothing available for this price. And these rooms would be available very quickly. This is a good use of our money.”
Some Residents Are Pushing Back: In October of 2024, the Palm Beach Post reported that some residents at Century Village are against the purchase and have sent emails in opposition.
