Cyberattack causes NJ water utility to pause billing customers

American Water, the nation’s largest regulated water and wastewater utility company, said Monday that it was hit by a cyberattack earlier this month, prompting the company to pause billing for its customers.

Camden-based American Water said it became aware of the Oct. 3 hack after it detected “unauthorized activity,” and in turn took protective measures, including shutting down certain systems.

New Jersey American Water — the Garden State’s branch of American Water — services 2.8 million customers, part of the 14 million American Water services across 14 states and 18 military installations.

New Jersey American Water provides water to towns and cities across Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Union and Warren counties.
