Western NC nursing homes hit by Helene to receive donations from Raleigh woman

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Raleigh woman is asking people to remember those in nursing homes in western North Carolina.

Adult diapers, glucose meters, and diaper rash cream aren’t the supplies people usually think of for hurricane relief, but Amanda Mount says they’re desperately needed to provide some dignity and comfort to people living in nursing homes hit by Helene.

“Elders built this community, they built our nation,” she said. “It’s so hard for me to see them in a position where they feel forgotten. It’s heartbreaking.”

Mount returned from western North Carolina, where she checked in with nursing homes in the communities of Fairview and Fletcher outside of Asheville.

“I sat down for probably three hours and talked with residents,” she said. “They were saddened by what they saw, but they were grateful to be alive. Because of their mental condition and physical condition, a lot of the residents are very confused and having a hard time understanding.”
