JPD to increase number of officers in patrol vehicles in high crime areas

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Jackson police will make some adjustments when it comes to manpower in the city.

In a 5-0 vote on Tuesday, the Jackson City Council passed a resolution in support of placing two officers in a patrol vehicle in high crime areas in order to curb violent crimes and drug activity.

There are concerns when it comes to officer safety, and some are concerned about how this will impact call time. Assistance Police Chief Wendell Watts said the department is rebuilding the police force, and they hope to be at full capacity soon. He wants the response time to remain under three to five minutes.

Jackson police chief swears in four experienced officers

The Jackson Police Department (JPD) is restructuring to meet residents’ needs.

“It’s not just Jackson. This law enforcement, you know, law enforcement that has been attacked throughout the nation at times. We have not. We’ve been blessed that, you know, we have not been attacked like that. But it is always something to be a little concerned about. But we take officer safety very seriously with the Jackson Police Department. We get them the best training that we can. We try to not, you know, put everybody alone in situations. There are too many calls that they go to, you know, any type of felony call, any type of disturbance. Two men are going for sure or two officers are going,” said Watts.
