Denver 911 was notified of the possible shooting at about 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2021. Officers were called to the intersection of East 40th Avenue and North Chambers Road. The agency told FOX31 in October 2021 that Castillo was riding in a Ford F-250 truck when he was shot and killed by a person in another vehicle.

The intersection is just north of Interstate 70 and is on the edge of Denver’s Montbello and Gateway – Green Valley Ranch neighborhoods. It’s also on the edge of the city of Aurora.

Police said they discovered 22-year-old Melchor Ruben Castillo at the intersection. He had been shot and was pronounced dead. In 2021, detectives told FOX31’s Greg Nieto that they were looking for a brown sedan, with not much more to go on.

Detectives have continued investigating the homicide , but the case remains unsolved. The Denver Police Department asks anyone with information about this incident to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or online at MetroDenverCrimeStoppers.com .
