Thousands in California to Lose Jobs as Year-End Approaches
California faces a significant wave of layoffs as multiple companies across various industries have filed Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices recently. From biotech firms to tech giants, thousands of employees are set to lose their jobs in the coming months, with layoffs affecting cities across the state.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act mandates that employers give 60 days’ notice to employees and local government officials ahead of plant closures and mass layoffs. This federal law is intended to give workers time to seek alternative employment or retraining opportunities. Over the past few days, the following WARN notices have been lodged with the California Employment Development Department.
These include:
- Key Energy Services is laying off staff in Ventura and San Ardo on December 2
- Blue Shield of California is laying off staff in Oakland on December 16.
- Avon is laying off 128 staff in Irvine on December 20
- AppLovin is laying off 65 staff in Palo Alto
- L3Harris Technologies is laying off 49 staff in Sonoma on December 12.
