Louisiana officials offer financial, symbolic support for Israel on anniversary of Hamas attack

Louisiana elected officials from Gov. Jeff Landry to state Treasurer John Fleming to U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson reiterated their support for Israel this week on the anniversary of the Palestinian militant group Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

The support come in both tangible and symbolic forms.

Landry, a Republican, signed an executive order to fly the state and U.S. flags at half staff.

“Israel is our greatest ally in the Middle East, and Louisiana will always stand strong with them,” he said. “Today, we stand in solidarity and remembrance of the atrocities Israel suffered on Oct. 7, 2023. We remember the victims and we pray for the hostages.”

Johnson, of Shreveport, supported a spring package of military aid for Israel that cleared Congress.

“As Hamas continues to hold hostages in Gaza, including four Americans, we remember the families who are fighting to bring their loved ones home,” Johnson said. “These brave families inspire us all to stand with Israel in its fight against terror and to work for the swift return of all those held captive by Hamas. The terror and antisemitism we’ve witnessed have demanded full resolve from America’s leaders, which is why Congress passed legislation in the spring to provide Israel with necessary military aid and support.”
