Build Your Own Boat: Homemade creations will face Montgomery Whitewater rapids

They say that hope floats. But with an event like Montgomery Whitewater’s Build Your Own Boat Competition that old saying should probably be, “You’d better hope it floats over rapids.”

The competition on Sunday, Oct. 13 is a splash beyond what this area’s seen with cardboard boat races.

“This is so new. We’ve never done it before,” said Megan McKenzie, Montgomery Whitewater’s chief marketing officer.

Homemade crafts will take a wild ride down the rapids in Montgomery Whitewater’s recirculating artificial river system. It’ll be on the competition channel, which flows next to Eddy’s Restaurant.

“Creativity is going to be your best friend,” McKenzie said. “We’re excited to see what people come up with.”

With a little luck, the boaters and their boats might make it through without sinking, crashing or going overboard.

It’s going to be lots of fun for fans, who get to see the whole thing happen for free. As always, there’s no admission charge to visit Montgomery Whitewater and look around the 120-acre site.
