Walz Supports Ending Electoral College, Harris Campaign Does Not

Additional Coverage:

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, expressed support for abolishing the Electoral College at a fundraiser.

However, the Harris campaign distanced itself from this view, stating that it is not an official position. The Electoral College system, which awards electors based on state representation, has favored Republicans in recent elections.

Despite this, the Harris-Walz ticket is focusing on winning 270 electoral votes in the upcoming election. The outcome is likely to hinge on a few key battleground states.

Walz’s comments have drawn criticism from the Trump campaign, which has accused him of laying the groundwork for challenging President Trump’s victory.

Supporters of the Electoral College argue that it forces campaigns to pay attention to voters in all areas, while critics contend that it has made elections primarily about a handful of swing states.

Abolition of the Electoral College could be achieved through a constitutional amendment or the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would award electoral votes to the candidate winning the national popular vote. Minnesota has joined this compact, bringing the total electoral votes represented to 205.
