Memphis family stuck in path of Hurricane Milton

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As Hurricane Milton heads towards Florida, a Memphis family is now stuck in Florida and unable to return home.

The family has been stuck since Monday and says right now the earliest they can return home is Sunday.

“There’s a lot of panic,” said Marlo Matthews, describing the scene in Orlando on Wednesday. “There’s people running out of gas on the expressway, so people cannot leave.”

Matthews said his fall break trip with his son from Memphis to Orlando has left them stranded as potentially catastrophic wind, flooding and storm surge barrels towards parts of Florida.

“My return flight for Thursday got cancelled. I bought a ticket for Wednesday and it was cancelled. I bought an international flight out of Canada flight for Monday and it was also cancelled,” Matthews said.

Hurricane Milton has families like the Matthews bracing for impact.

“There is no way out of here,” he said.

Matthews says thankfully the resort he’s at is packed with what he needs to stay safe and make it back to Memphis safely next week.
