Lubbock County Commissioners Court discusses what court looks like after walkout protest

LUBBOCK, Texas — After over a month of a walkout protest from two Lubbock County commissioners to prevent a tax rate increase, the county went back to the no new revenue rate, and their next meeting is on Monday.

The walkout divided the court and Jason Corley, one of the commissioners who participated in the boycott, talked about the protest.

“We made it clear at the beginning of the budget process that we wanted an effective tax rate. And that’s what our constituents expected from us, and other members of the Court did not feel the same,” Corley said.

Commissioner Terence Kovar, who did show up for all the meetings in support of the proposed tax rate increase, gave his perspective on the situation.

“It really wasn’t a surprise. They talked about doing this from the very beginning before we even started the budget session,” Kovar said.
