Accidental shooting by son leaves mother dead in Northern California, police say

(FOX40.COM) — Officials in far Northern California detained a man who they say accidentally fatally shot his mother with a stolen rifle .

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said that on the afternoon of October 2, deputies responded to a residence in the community of Dorris and found Mary Loretta Curtz, 55, with a fatal gunshot wound.

Dorris is located close to the border with Oregon, about 280 miles north of Sacramento.

The sheriff’s office said that while deputies were at the site, a man called emergency services and reported that he “accidentally shot his mother with a stolen rifle.”

Emergency dispatchers continued talking with the 22-year-old man and convinced him to turn himself in to California Highway Patrol officers, the sheriff’s office said.

The man was arrested and taken to the Siskiyou County Jail.
