TxDOT Amarillo employee earns award for snowstorm rescue efforts

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Officials with TxDOT Amarillo announced that an employee was recognized for helping a stranded driver during a snowstorm in Channing.

According to a TxDOT press release, Ben Dominguez, equipment operator for TxDOT’s Amarillo District, received the “Extra Mile Award” at the 2024 Transportation Short Course ceremony.

“The Extra Mile Award recognizes employees who have acted heroically to help out a fellow Texan in need,” said TxDOT Amarillo District Engineer Blair Johnson. “Dominguez’s heroic efforts are a prime example of why this award is given out and why we are so proud to have him in the Amarillo District.”

TxDOT detailed that Dominguez was traveling northbound on US 385 during a snowstorm south of Channing when a car in front of him lost control and began rolling. The car ended on its roof in a northbound ditch.

TxDOT said Dominguez pulled over and ran toward the wrecked car to provide the driver help, he discovered the driver upside down unable to unbuckle their seatbelt.
