Deceased person on I-26 shuts down westbound lanes near Ashley Phosphate Road overpass

UPDATE: North Charleston PD said I-26 lanes have reopened; however, traffic remains very heavy in the area.

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities are responding to a deceased individual in the westbound lanes of I-26 at the Ashley Phosphate Road overpass.

Trooper Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said an incident occurred near the 209 mile marker. All westbound lanes are closed.

The North Charleston Police Department said its officers were responding to a deceased person on the interstate under the Ashley Phosphate Road overpass.

The incident has backed up traffic for miles.

Vehicles are exiting at the 209 ramp on the interstate. Drivers should expect delays and find an alternate route.
