Champaign Co. sees less early voting, while more than 200K votes cast across IL

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — While the election is more than four weeks away, hundreds of thousands of Illinoisans have already made their voice heard.

But, while the 2020 election saw record-breaking voter turnout in Champaign County that’s not the case so far this year.

The Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons said — as of Thursday afternoon — around 2,000 early voters have cast ballots in-person so far.

“To give some comparison, the only other presidential election I’ve administered was in 2020,” Ammons said. “We had 1,400 or 1,500 people come out and vote in the first two days in 2020.”

Early voting by mail is looking a bit better, with more than 4,000 ballots coming in so far. Ammons said there’s about 108,000 registered voters in the county.

“I’m confident that we’ll have a strong turnout,” Ammons said. “Will it eclipse 2020? I’m not so sure about that.”

2020 was the highest voter turnout in the history of the county. Just over 96,000 cast their ballot.
