Proposal to Turn Florida La Quinta Inn Into Homeless Shelter Faces Backlash From Locals

West Palm Beach, FL – A proposal to convert a local La Quinta Inn into housing for the homeless has sparked controversy among nearby residents, following a county-wide effort to address homelessness in the wake of Florida’s new legislation barring encampments on public streets.

In September 2024, Palm Beach County Commissioners unanimously approved negotiations to purchase the La Quinta Inn, located at 5981 Okeechobee Boulevard, for $16.7 million. The move is part of a broader initiative to find affordable and immediate housing solutions for the county’s homeless population.

Palm Beach County Mayor Maria Sachs has expressed strong support for the plan, stating, “We’re doing everything we can to make sure every homeless person has a roof over their head.” Commissioner Maria Marino echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial advantages of the proposal. “There is nothing available for this price. And these rooms would be available very quickly. This is a good use of our money,” Marino said.
