Amarillo High girls’ cross country wins district, Palo Duro’s Saidgurhan takes boys’ title

On Thursday morning, multiple schools in the Texas Panhandle competed at the District 3-5A Cross Country Meet held at Rick Klein Sports Complex.

Boys and girls teams from Lubbock High, Lubbock-Cooper, Coronado, Monterey, Plainview, Palo Duro, Caprock, Tascosa and Amarillo High raced for the district championship and a spot in the regional cross country meet, where teams and individual athletes can qualify for the state meet in Round Rock.

On the girls side, Amarillo High was crowned district champions, notching 67 points. The Sandies were led by Kinley Davis, who placed fifth with a time of 19 minutes, 44.59 seconds.

Kylee Costly ran 19:53.79 to finish one spot behind Davis in sixth, and Braylee Cothrin ran 20:36.81 to round out AHS’ top three and finish in 13th place.

Amarillo High’s Everitt Kite, Adysen Hawley and Claire Baer finished 21st, 22nd and 23rd, while Sierra Hesse placed 39th out of 62 runners to help the Sandies win a district title.

For the boys, Palo Duro’s Abdirisak Saidgurhan won the District 3-5A individual championship with a time of 15:18.54, but the Dons placed fourth as a team.
