Northern lights over Illinois Thursday night

CHICAGO — Did you catch it? The northern lights returned to the Chicago area Thursday night.

Clear skies created a perfect canvas for Chicagoans to view the aurora borealis.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for Thursday into Friday after an outburst from the sun was detected earlier this week.

Parts of Illinois could see celestial glow from northern lights Thursday, thanks to ‘severe’ geomagnetic storm

The storm is what triggered the northern lights, which were seen as far south in the U.S., the lower Midwest and Northern California.
