Horry County barricade suspect dies days after attempted suicide at jail

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — An Horry County man jailed last month after a standoff and officer-involved shooting near Surfside Beach died this week at a local hospital after he was found unresponsive Saturday morning following an attempted suicide.

An officer at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center found Neil Wade Brown at about 10:15 a.m. Saturday and alerted members of the jail’s medical team, an Horry County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told News13 on Friday.

EMS responded and took Brown to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. An obituary posted online by a North Carolina funeral home said Brown, 60, died on Tuesday at the hospital.

“The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an inquiry into the incident, in accordance with Detention Center protocol,” the spokesperson said.

News13 has reached out to SLED and the Horry County Coroner’s Office for more information. News13 initially contacted the sheriff’s office late Wednesday afternoon and then again on Thursday and Friday morning after getting a tip that Brown had died.
