Rockford’s Jeeps and Tacos Fest came to be during COVID but quickly became a fan favorite

How much do you know about the history of Hispanic and Latino culture and community in Rockford?

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Rockford Register Star has partnered with La Onda, a newly-formed nonprofit organization, to help share and celebrate the impact of Hispanic and Latino people, businesses and organizations in and around the Rockford area.

The free multicultural Cinco de Mayo Jeeps and Tacos Fest has become a beloved Rockford event marking the start of summer.

Originally created in response to the economic impact of COVID-19, Alonso Kling, along with Screw City Jeeps 815 and Supermercado Guanajuato owner Pedro Silva, launched the event in May 2021. Held at Supermercado Guanajuato’s parking lot, the inaugural fest featured a 40 Jeep meet and tacos made on-site, successfully drawing patrons to support local businesses.
