Lower speed limits and more: Worcester’s plan to reduce fatal crashes is ready to launch

WORCESTER — Signs establishing the city’s new 25 mph statutory speed limit are coming soon to city streets. In addition, two streets that were the site of serious crashes will get traffic safety changes next week.

As part of the rollout of the first phase of the city’s Vision Zero Initiatives to improve traffic safety in a city rocked by a series of serious accidents, the city will install 82 new 25 mph speed limit signs beginning the week of Oct. 21.

According to a communication from the Department of Transportation and Mobility on Tuesday’s City Council agenda, enforcement of the new speed limit will begin Jan. 2.

The city is also implementing immediate street safety measures at the intersection of South Ludlow and Clover streets, and on Shrewsbury Street.

The city expects the installation of the new signs to take approximately three weeks to complete, according to a city news release.

To spread awareness of the new speed limit, the Department of Transportation and Mobility will use message signs at “high visibility locations” around the city, make yard signs available for residents and launch a public education campaign.
