School districts unsure of reopening

Hurricane Milton left a storm surge as high as 7 feet in Venice, with flooding pushing past Lemon Bay storefronts and the Peace River overflowing into parking lots.

Some school districts are still making decisions regarding reopening for staff and students.

Due to continuous connectivity and power outages, Sarasota County Schools said they are still assessing the damage to facilities.

“Once we know that power and connectivity are back, we will be better positioned to provide updates and a reopening date,” Director of Communications Craig Maniglia said.

During a news conference in Sarasota, Superintendent Terry Connor said a decision on school reopening will be announced Saturday.

Charlotte County Public Schools officials said Monday is still a scheduled teacher work day.

“We are assessing the schools today and will make notifications right after,” officials said in an online post Friday.

School District of DeSoto County officially closed its shelter at DeSoto Middle School on Friday morning.
