Family gets keys, settles in to new Lubbock Habitat for Humanity home

Keandra Ruth and her family will be settling into their new home this weekend.

Lubbock Habitat for Humanity dedicated the new Habitat house to Ruth and her children with a special ceremony Thursday at the home on East Dartmouth Street, according to Lubbock Habitat Executive Director Christy Reeves. The home was one of several Habitat houses completed during the non-profit organization’s 2023 Blitz Build , when volunteers helped build three houses over a 12-day period last September.

Ruth and her family received the keys to their brand new home during the ceremony and officially closed on the house Friday. She completed the required 150 hours of education classes and 100 hours of construction required for the Habitat program. The classes focus on financial literacy to prepare future homeowners to pay their no interest, affordable mortgage after the closing. The construction hours help teach homeowners skills which will help them maintain their homes to save on future repairs.

“We are all absolutely thrilled to see this family receive their new home,” Reeves said. “It’s such a blessing to see this house become a home. This build was not just the building of a home but the building of new dreams and beginnings.”
