Nearly a dozen people, including children, fell ill after eating toxic mushrooms in Pennsylvania, an incident officials have described as a “mass casualty” event.
Emergency medical personnel were called on Friday to a home along the 200 block of Burke Road in Peach Bottom Township, located near the Maryland state line and about 55 miles southeast of Harrisburg, according to a Facebook post from Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company Station 57.
“Units were advised that 11 people had ingested toxic mushrooms and were all ill,” prompting a response from emergency units in York, Lancaster and Harford counties around 9:30 p.m., the post said.
The Pennsylvania State Police were also called to the private residence, Fox affiliate WPMT reported.
“Units cleared the scene in just over an hour,” per the Facebook post.
Delta-Cardiff Fire Chief Laura Taylor confirmed both children and adults ingested the toxic mushrooms. They were all rushed to WellSpan York Hospital and have since been listed in stable condition.
