Former Miami-Dade corrections officer faces charges in elderly neighbor case in Florida

A former Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation officer is at the center of a case involving an elderly neighbor in Miramar, Florida. According to Local 10 News, Carmelia Regina Newbold, 51, was taken into custody by Broward County deputies on Thursday.

The report revealed that the case revolves around Thomas Edward Chiappetta, who lived next door to Newbold on Harbour Boulevard. Chiappetta’s sister, who was his primary caregiver, passed away in 2020.

Following this, WSVN 7 News reported Newbold allegedly produced a durable power of attorney document, claiming it was signed by Chiappetta.

Broward Property Appraiser Marty Kiar and the Broward Sheriff’s Office reported that the power of attorney gave Newbold control over Chiappetta and his assets.

However, the investigation found that Chiappetta did not have the mental capacity to sign such a document.

After obtaining the power of attorney, Newbold reportedly received proceeds from Chiappetta’s sister’s life insurance policy and his Social Security benefits. She was also reportedly named as the beneficiary of Chiappetta’s life insurance policy.
