Norfolk State nearly knocks off Towson with freshman QB making his first start, but falls short

NORFOLK — Norfolk State gave Towson everything it had on Saturday, but it ultimately wasn’t enough. The Spartans lost 28-23, extending their losing streak to three games and dropping their record to 2-6.

“It’s gonna come down to the end with the Spartans, it’s tough to get over that hurdle,” head coach Dawson Odums said. “But I’m proud of these guys, man. They fight, they compete, we’re just three pieces of the puzzle (away). And it’s been tough, but the end of the day, you got to keep showing up to work and that’s what they do. They show up to work and you just want to reward themselves with a win. We’re close, man. It’s just, just at the end, that ball don’t bounce our way.”

With starting quarterback Jalen Daniels out with a head injury, the Spartans entered the game behind the eight ball. As a result, true freshman Vinson Berry took over the reins of the Spartans’ offense for his first collegiate start.

Berry was 14 for 31 through the air for 198 passing yards and one touchdown, although his and every other player’s official stat lines were unavailable at the time of publication due to a technical error in the live stats system.
