Myrtle Beach Police arrest man after woman claims he sexually assaulted her as a minor

Myrtle Beach Police arrested a 37-year-old man after a woman told police he allegedly assaulted her at a hotel in 2010.

Joseph Witherspoon was arrested Oct. 10 for first-degree criminal sexual assault with a minor. He is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.

The victim told police on July 29 that while vacationing at the Caribbean Resort , 3000 North Ocean Boulevard, in November 2010, Witherspoon assaulted her, a police report said. The age of the victim was not shared but the charge involving a minor means the victim was 11 years old or younger , according to South Carolina law.

The relationship between Witherspoon and the victim was not reported.

Witherspoon would have been 23-years-old at the time of the assault. Myrtle Beach Police investigations and major crime units were notified after the crime was reported in July.

South Carolina has no statute of limitations on criminal charges , according to the Law Offices of Kenneth Berger.
