North Korea Threatens Military Action Against South Korea
North Korea has declared that its military is ready to launch strikes against South Korea in response to the latter’s alleged drone flights over Pyongyang. South Korea has declined to confirm the drone incursion but has vowed retaliation if its citizens are threatened.
According to North Korea, South Korean drones have entered its airspace three times, dropping propaganda leaflets. Officials have warned that any further incursions will be met with force.
The North Korean Defense Ministry has reportedly issued orders to artillery units near the border to prepare for immediate strikes against unspecified targets. A military spokesperson has stated that South Korea could be “reduced to ashes” by North Korea’s attack.
Tensions between North and South Korea have escalated since 2019, when diplomacy to end North Korea’s nuclear program collapsed. North Korea has since expanded its nuclear arsenal and repeatedly threatened to use it against the South and the US.
Despite these threats, experts believe it is unlikely that North Korea will launch a full-scale attack, as the US and South Korea’s military capabilities far surpass its own.
