Monday Memories: October pow wow a celebration of Native American Culture

The Native American Intertribal Association of Toledo’s October pow wow began in 1988 as a small, one-day mini event In Trilby Park, with less than 10 dancers and about 30 spectators. It quickly grew to a two-day celebration of Native American Culture at Summit Hall in Point Place, drawing at least 1,000 spectators and Native Americans from other states and Canada. Participants shared their knowledge of Native American culture while celebrating with food, dancing and songs.

In this 2004 Blade Archive photo, Vincent Moore of Bad River, Wis., leads dancers during the association’s 17th annual pow wow at Summit Hall in Point Place. The association eventually dissolved after the death of a founder, Joyce “Snowfeather” Mahaney, in 2006.
