When national literacy advocate Kareem Weaver visited Savannah last November to screen his documentary, “ The Right to Read ,” he emphasized, “[Literacy] is a social justice issue…that helps the school district navigate some of the politics, that this is not left or right.”
Weaver, the co-founder and executive director of FULCRUM , returns to Savannah as part of Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools’ 2024 Literacy Week, Oct. 15 – 19. A press release shared by SCCPSS Executive Director of Communications Stacy Jennings outlined a series of events taking place throughout the week that are “designed to empower families, students, and the community to exercise their right to read.”
Those events begin first thing Tuesday, Oct. 15, when Weaver is scheduled to meet with local school district and community leaders and advocates to share best practices for literacy gains. He will kick things off by joining district literacy leaders at a school-specific family engagement event at Leiston Shuman Elementary School.
