Nevada teen drivers may pay $7K more yearly for car insurance

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – On average, teen drivers in Nevada pay an extra $7,000 in car insurance a year compared to teens nationwide.

Often parents can help their teens reduce their car insurance rates,  a Henderson dad spoke to 8 News Now on how he managed to save some money.

Lexie Mellinger, 16, of Henderson, received her license recently. She’s a cautious driver, according to her dad, Alex Mellinger.

“On her first driving test, she got dinged for going too slow,” he said.

The risk for crashes is the highest during the first few months teens have their driver’s license.
Drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are more likely to get into a crash than drivers in any other age group, David Straughan an auto insurance expert explained that due to a lack of driving experience, and higher chances of violations, coverage for teens is very costly.

In the state of Nevada, rates reflect a high number of fatal accidents, car thefts, and percentage of uninsured drivers. Car insurance for Nevada teens is 122% more expensive than the national teen average. 16-year-olds in Nevada pay the number two most annually in full-coverage car insurance at $12,782, compared to the nationwide teen car insurance average of $5,769 a year.
