Rain, Possible Santa Ana Winds Forecast for SD County by End of Week

Rain is forecast for parts of San Diego County later this week, along with the potential for the season’s first Santa Ana wind event, though meteorologists remain uncertain about its intensity.

The cooling trend is expected to continue with chillier than average temperatures for the coast and adjacent inland valleys, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures Tuesday are expected to reach 65 to 70 near the coast, 69 to 72 inland, 70 to 75 in the western valleys, 76 to 81 near the foothills, 75 to 85 in the mountains and 93 to 97 in the desert.

Several low pressure troughs veering toward the region out of the Pacific Northwest were expected to produce light to moderate showers by the end of the week, the NWS said.

“Strength and timing … remain uncertain, as the track of the low pressure system is still in flux,” according to an NWS statement.

The agency further noted that “Santa Ana winds are beginning to look increasingly likely,” possibly on the heels of the trough as it exits to the east, replaced by a high pressure ridge over the Great Basin of Utah and Nevada. The Weather Service’s surface prognostication chart published Monday showed the ridge settling in Saturday and Sunday.
