‘Jazztober’ bringing the right notes to Downtown Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — It’s that time of year again, Jazztober is taking over Polk Street in downtown Amarillo.

“I love that it’s just a free event,” said Beth Duke, Executive Director of Center City Amarillo. “The fall weather is beautiful, it’s wonderful, the sun goes kind of behind the house, and people just enjoy an evening of come and go jazz, and it’s important for us to have a lot of free and low cost events.”

Duke told MyHighPlains.com that the concerts, which are held every Tuesday evening in October at the historic Bivins Mansion, are free and open to the public.

“We take the porch that becomes the jazz stage. People bring their own chairs, they bring their kids, their dogs, their picnic, and we just have an hour-and-a-half concert of free jazz,” Duke explained.

Duke said the concert serve as a good listening session as well as a pause from everyday life for many.

“Sometimes you need a night out. I think my favorite part is just watching the families, we’ll see families with little kids spread out on a blanket,” she recalled.
