LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Meteorologist Leah Rodriguez details the closest Supermoon this year.

Set a reminder to look up at the sky on the morning of October 17th. Unlike other astronomical events, this phenomenon is happening at a reasonable time for all the parents and kids getting ready for school and work. The Supermoon will reach maximum fullness at 6:26 AM CDT.

This is the second of three Supermoons occurring in 2024. October’s Supermoon will appear slightly bigger than the other two because it will have the shortest distance from Earth. Typically, the moon has an average distance of 239,000 miles from Earth, but on October 17th the moon will be 17,000 miles closer.

The last Supermoon of this year is on November 15 when the moon will be close to 225,000 miles away again.

Breaking down the Name

A supermoon occurs when a full moon is at a shorter distance from the Earth. This is what makes the moon appear much bigger than we’re used to. Supermoons can also appear up to 15% brighter than a regular moon.
