WATERLOO — The city of Waterloo is seeking public input on a law prohibiting chickens inside the city.
At the public health and safety meeting Oct. 3, residents brought in a petition signed by people in Waterloo and surrounding areas arguing that they should be allowed to raise chickens inside the city.
Currently, the city’s strategic plan does not allow chickens. Waterloo mayor Jenifer Quimby said she doesn’t want a city committee to make the call on the law, she wants to hear from the people.
If most people in Waterloo truly want chickens to be allowed, Quimby wants the city council to take that into consideration.
“I want the city to decide,” Quimby said.
The city of Waterloo is holding a public hearing at the plan commission meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. inside city hall. Anyone is welcome to attend and share their thoughts.
At the meeting, the planning commission will determine whether to dismiss the proposed regulation change, or make a recommendation to city council to change the law and allow chickens in the city.
