City Council to discuss hurricane damage

PUNTA GORDA — With cleanup efforts underway at the Military Heritage Museum, the city moved the next meeting of the Punta Gorda City Council.

The 9 a.m. Wednesday meeting is planned for the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association building at 2001 Shreve Street.

The agenda includes a discussion on hurricane damages and repairs.

The historic downtown neighborhood, including multiple businesses, was flooded by Hurricane Helene. As those residents and business owners worked to restore that damage, Hurricane Milton flooded many again last week.

Debris removal should begin Wednesday. Regular garbage and recycling are on a normal schedule. But yard waste routes aren’t running yet.

With several shipwrecked boats along streets and city facilities, the Laishley Park city marina on Charlotte Harbor is closed.

Earlier this year, the council struggled to deal with how much it will cost to repair the marina after Hurricane Ian damaged it two years ago. The city still hasn’t been paid for claims filed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for some citywide facilities damage.
