Helping after disasters

After a hurricane, tornado or other disaster, Greg Carter looks into a survivor’s eyes and tells them he cares about what they went through and gives them a hot meal and supplies.

“You can tell they are hurting,” Carter said.

He has been a truck driver for Walmart Transportation for 34 years.

“So many are grateful for the help. If they want to talk, we talk,” he said. “We feed them and pray with them if they ask. It’s such a good feeling to do what we can for them.”

Carter and Rickey Oliver started the Walmart Mobile Relief Kitchen in 2017 after a F5 tornado hit Henryville, Indiana.

“I went into work and said: ‘Hey boss, we can help those people. We can cook for them.’ And we did,” he said, adding a small crew of Walmart truck drivers prepared 1,400 meals for the tornado survivors.

By 2018, the crew responded to Hurricane Michael survivors hit hard in the Florida Panhandle.

“I asked Tyson Foods if they would help,” he said. “They came on board and now provide all of the protein for our meals.”
