Man accused of stealing thousands in liquor from Downtown businesses

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is facing multiple burglary charges after police say he broke into multiple Downtown Memphis businesses and stole thousands of dollars worth of liquor.

Darren Wright, 39, was taken into custody on Monday and charged with five counts of Burglary of a business and Theft of Property $2,500 to $10,000.

The break-ins took place between September 20 and October 11.

Police say Wright’s first offense was a burglary at Memphis Chess Club on Madison Avenue. He allegedly broke in through the front door and filled up a garbage bag with various liquor bottles, totaling $1,300 in alcohol.

Wright returned to the business on October 1 and 8, stealing another $700 in liquor, reports say.

On October 11, Wright allegedly broke into Blues Hall and King’s Palace Cafe, both on Beale Street, and stole $800 in liquor bottles.

Wright is accused of stealing a total of $2,800 in liquor from the businesses.

His bond has not been set.
