Season’s first frost in the forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday nights in Evansville

The first cold snap of the year arrives this week, though it’ll be a relatively brief one.

The National Weather Service says temps will dip to near freezing levels on Tuesday night and Wednesday night in the wake of a cold front that moved through the region late Sunday.

It could even lead to the first frost of the season, forecasters said.

Frost possible Tuesday, Wednesday nights in Evansville area

The National Weather Service forecast indicates frost is “likely” Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and when you check annual statistics for the region, the timing’s just about right.

The agency’s records show the average for the first time it reaches 36 degrees in Evansville (a good spot for frost to show up, given other conditions such as humidity and calm winds) is Oct. 17. The average first 34-degree reading is Oct. 21.

The low temperatures Tuesday night (35 degrees) and Wednesday night (33 degrees) hit those marks.

Should the temperature drop to freezing (32 degrees), it would be about two weeks early for the Evansville area, which on average sees it first freeze on Oct. 29.
