Boat found in front yard brings headache, fees

VENICE — For many people, Hurricane Milton brought storm surge, fallen power lines and broken fences.

For Sara Weece, Milton brought her a boat.

Problem is, she can’t keep it.

Weece, currently in Connecticut, said she had photos taken of damage from the storm over the weekend.

After he discovered a boat in her front yard, Weece surmised it washed ashore from the Myakka River near her home during Hurricane Milton.

Weece made the decision to find its owner through its registration number.

But before she could make a plan, Weece said learned a person wanted to take the boat without Weece’s consent, sell it and split the profits with a second person.

“I just don’t know who the person was,” Weece told The Daily Sun on Monday.

After speaking with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Weece said the situation got worse.

The FWC, a state law enforcement agency, said they only have jurisdiction over boats found in the water.

FWC Public Information Officer Ashlee Sklute said the process isn’t so black and white when it comes to derelict, or broken-down, vessels.
