Drivers will spot more sharks on Rhode Island roads after another round of Atlantic Shark Institute fundraising license plates is distributed Saturday.
Owners of commercial vehicles who ordered plates can pick them up between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday at the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles ‘ main office at 600 New London Ave. in Cranston, the Atlantic Shark Institute announced Tuesday morning.
The plates feature an image of the endangered shortfin mako shark , and $20 from each plate sale supports the institute’s work.
To print the plates, the DMV must receive a minimum of 600 orders. That threshold had already been met for passenger and combination plates . It’s now been met for commercial plates.
The shark plate is the fastest-selling charity plate in Rhode Island history and also the first charity to have three versions of the plate – passenger, combination and commercial – available for purchase, according to the Atlantic Shark Institute.
“We are so appreciative and overwhelmed by the support that this charity plate has received,” said Jon Dodd, executive director of the institute. “With three versions on the road, and the motorcycle version in pre-order, every plate sold helps with our critical research.”
