Off-Duty Detroit Officer Killed in Suicide-by-Cop Incident

An off-duty Detroit police officer was fatally shot after he opened fire on two fellow officers, Chief James White announced. The 45-year-old suspect, a 13-year veteran, was identified as a member of the department’s special response team.

According to White, the suspect was off-duty but in uniform when officers responded to a suicide-in-progress call. The suspect, reportedly struggling with mental health issues, allegedly threatened suicide and “asked for suicide by cop.”

Despite the officers taking cover behind their vehicle, the suspect fired multiple shots at their car, injuring both. One officer returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The injured officers sustained non-life-threatening leg injuries.

White emphasized the tragic nature of the incident, highlighting the prevalence of mental health crises. He commended the responding officers for their heroism and praised the special response team for their specialized training and bravery.

Mayor Mike Duggan echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for the police department’s efforts. He noted that the incident serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Detroit’s officers.

The Michigan State Police is investigating the matter. White revealed that the suspect had an undisclosed degenerative condition and had recently returned to full duty.
