Former Mexican Security Chief Imprisoned for Cartel Corruption

Genaro García Luna, Mexico’s former top security official, was sentenced to over 38 years in prison in the US for accepting bribes from the Sinaloa cartel.

García Luna, once hailed as a key ally in the war on drugs, used his position to provide information and facilitate drug trafficking for the cartel. He allegedly received millions of dollars in cash at various locations, including a safe house with a secret wall.

Prosecutors argued that García Luna’s actions contributed to the deaths of thousands and demanded a life sentence. His attorneys pleaded for leniency, citing his family’s suffering and his cooperation in the arrest of cartel leaders.

García Luna’s conviction comes amidst the recent arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, another Sinaloa cartel co-founder, and the detention of Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of “El Chapo.”
