Ramone, Meyer square off in Delaware gubernatorial debate

NEWARK—The final portion of the University of Delaware’s “Delaware Debates” saw extensive back-and-forth between the First State’s two candidates for governor on Thursday: Democrat Matt Meyer and Republican Mike Ramone.

The two-term Democratic New Castle County executive and 16-year state representative, who leads the Republican caucus in the House of Representatives, are vying to succeed term-limited Gov. John Carney on Nov. 5.

The two candidates shared their policy stances on a number of issues facing the First State, and though the debate got contentious at times, both Mr. Meyer and Rep. Ramone provided an outlet for undecided Delawareans to see where the candidates stand in the final weeks of election season.

Housing

Moderators Tom Byrne and Sarah Petrowich of Delaware Public Media posed several questions to the candidates about the state of housing, homelessness and the barriers preventing Delaware from providing an adequate number of affordable housing opportunities.

Mr. Meyer touted his record as county executive in providing pathways for housing, stating that housing is a right for all. He expanded on the current hurdles facing the market, noting that “tax cuts are not the solution for the crisis of affordability.”
