Springfield neighbors react to new gunshot sensor trial

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Springfield Police have responded to over 1,400 ‘shots fired’ calls since 2020.

“There’s a gun violence problem throughout the United States and Springfield, too. We have too many people out here shooting and firing off weapons needlessly at night at each other for no reason, and we want that number to go down,” Captain Culley Wilson with SPD said.

They’re hoping a new trial will show if it will help with that number.

“We have had the Flock safety cameras for going on about three years now. We have 28 cameras within Springfield. They’ve worked out very well. We’ve had quite a bit of success with it. Gunshot detection systems have been out five years approximately, you know, maybe a little bit longer than that. Probably the past five years, different entities have been or different cities have been looking at it and testing it out, seeing if it works,” Wilson said.

The trial is Raven audio detection system and it is part of Flock’s list of other programs.

“We’re doing a test program right now with the Flock Ravens to see if it is something that we can utilize the future, something we want, if it works,” Wilson said.
