Reshuffling the SEC: Georgia beats Texas, Alabama loses again and league race gets tighter at the top

Given the circumstances, Georgia responded like a champion.

Consider what could have happened with three minutes left in the third quarter. Officials took five minutes to overturn a pass interference call on the field in which Texas safety Jahdae Barron intercepted a Carson Beck pass and set the Longhorns up inside the Georgia 10-yard-line. Of course, that came after Longhorns fans littered the field with objects in protest.

Texas scored a touchdown two plays later on a pass from Quinn Ewers to Jaydon Blue to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 23-15. Was a second-half meltdown that matched Georgia’s first-half meltdown on Sept. 28 at Alabama in the works?

The Bulldogs answered with an 11-play, 89-yard drive which Trevor Etienne closed out with a 1-yard touchdown run. No. 5 Georgia beat No. 1 Texas 30-15 and re-asserted its place in the SEC, College Football Playoff and national championship race.

“I’m so proud of these guys because nobody believed,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on the ABC telecast. “Nobody gave us a chance. Your whole network doubted us. Nobody believed us, and then they tried to rob us with calls in this place. These guys are so resilient.”
