El Paso City Council race heats up: Over 20 candidates vie for 6 seats in 2024 election

El Paso voters are about to have a say in fundamental changes in the City Council ― early voting in Texas starts Monday, Oct. 21.

Six City Council seats are up for grabs on the Nov. 5 ballot and only two of those will see incumbents in the race. That means that at least four districts will be represented by new representatives, three of them for the first time in eight years.

The half-dozen races have drawn over 20 candidates for voters to consider. It’s unlike the make of the council will be decided on Election Day. A runoff election might be required to decide who get the seats after the races are winnowed down to two runoff candidates.

A candidate must collect more than 50% of the early and Election Day vote to avoid a runoff election.

The District 1 seat came open when current West Side city Rep. Brian Kennedy announced his bid for mayor only two years into his first term on the City Council, a trend repeated elsewhere on the November ballot.
