A Naples man faces numerous charges after leading law enforcement on a chase along Interstate 75 before crashing Saturday night, state police say.
David Alfonso, 36, was driving a stolen Ford F250 pickup when Florida Highway Patrol at 9:11 p.m. joined Collier County sheriff’s deputies north on I-75, approaching Corkscrew Road. Authorities said the pickup was suspected of being stolen out of Lee County and involved in a Lee burglary.
The pickup continued “to actively flee at high a rate of speed on several roadways, evading FHP attempts to stop,” state police said in a news release Sunday morning. State troopers initiated a successful Pursuit Immobilization Technique, or PIT, maneuver at Alico Road and Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.
Once stopped, the driver fled on foot and was found a short time later, hiding in a drainage canal, FHP said.
Alfonso was charged with aggravated fleeing to elude; reckless driving; license suspended (habitual offender with 18 prior suspensions); grant theft; warrant; battery on a law enforcement officer; resisting arrest; and criminal mischief.
