Years in the making, new Bay Area Costco opens to camped-out crowds

A new Bay Area Costco opened today in Napa, but people across the county have been anticipating this one for years.

As early as Oct. 12, according to KTVU, fans of the big-box warehouse store brought out their camping chairs, blankets and snacks to be some of the very first people through the doors at 280 Riversound Way, the first Costco in the county. Until now, customers had to drive to Fairfield, Santa Rosa, Vacaville or Vallejo to load up on bulk items and $5 roast chickens.

With the big news announced as far back as 2018, the store was ready for a celebration on opening day — plenty of bottles of the 49ers’ official whiskey were to be on hand, according to the Press Democrat — and there was even a Napa Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. To help feed the loyal customers who slept overnight, Costco management brought out its signature $9.95 pizzas, according to the Press Democrat.

As is fitting for a Costco warehouse in wine country, the new Costco is to be home to a large wine selection, reportedly described by management as “the largest wine selection at any Costco in the country” to the Press Democrat and “one of the largest at our grand openings” to KTVU.
