Series of earthquakes strike off Catalina Island

KTLA — An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.6 struck in waters near Catalina Island Sunday after two previous and smaller quakes.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey , the first quake, a M3.1, hit at 4:11 p.m. and was followed by a M2.5 aftershock just four minutes later about 34 miles south southwest of Dana Point and San Clemente and nearly 29 miles off Catalina.

The temblor struck at a depth of nearly 3.5 miles or 5.5 kilometers, the USGS reported.

At 5:32 p.m., the third quake struck in roughly the same location.

There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.
